5 Tips to Help You Find Your Forever CA
By Drs. Tom Georges & Steve Levine
So, you want to hire a new CA? You’re not alone – and we can tell you, this is one of the most common things we hear amongst our colleagues. How do you find the right person? How do you find your forever CA? Here are a few hiring tips to help you along your search for the perfect team member:
1) Personality over experience! So many doctors are looking for the trained CA – someone who is already experienced in running a front desk, billing insurance or savvy with specific software you just implemented. The fact of the matter is, you can train on skills, but you can’t change someone’s personality! As much as we hate to admit this sometimes, we are in the personality business – where our personalities (and our staff’s) make or break a patient’s decision to continue care with us. Do yourself a favor: hire for personality. The rest can unfold as you train them on the skills required to run a successful practice.
2) Check yourself! Often times we find ourselves caught up in asking why someone didn’t want to come back for a second interview, or why the CA that we hired decided not to come back after their first week at work. Is it them, or could it also be you? Think about it … they are interviewing you as much as you are interviewing them. The most successful companies out there believe that a positive work environment and happy employees are key elements to a successful business. Why not mimic what successful people do when it comes to your team? How are you showing up as a leader? How do people feel when they first meet you? Although inaccurate at times, first impressions DO matter – so check yourself before you wonder why you can’t attract the perfect team member.
3) Have patience! The challenge with hiring the right people is that it takes a lot longer than hiring the first person who seems like they could work and accepts an affordable hourly salary. You have to be prepared to invest a good chunk of time in the process — finding candidates, interviewing them, trying them out — it’s more similar to dating than anything else; there’s a dating dance or ritual that has to take place in the process. Once you have tested the waters, and there is a mutual agreement that it’s a great employer/employee match, then you can sing your victory song – because chances are, you’ve hired your forever CA!
4) Tap into your network! With so many resumes flooding in, you should rely on inbound candidates even less than you ever have. Your friends and their friends know the fantastic players who are searching for their next opportunity; tap into them and save yourself a lot of paper time. Most of the time, the perfect person is right under your nose – so take an extra look, and you’ll find them!
5) Don’t settle! Almost every tip we’ve provided works in both a good and lousy economy. But let's be honest: When the good times roll, it's easier to find someone and say "good enough." But in a down economy, you should never do this. Save yourself time and money and take the time you need to find the right candidate in order to find your forever CA!
The hiring game is indeed a process – don’t let anyone tell you differently. We live in a world where hard work, dedication, perseverance and intuition combined give you the edge to be successful. The same goes with hiring – if you take the right steps and abide by our five tips, you’ll be successful in attracting the perfect fit for your practice, aka your forever CA.
